Rep. Matsui Praises Sacramento Clean-Tech Companies for Active Pursuit of Federal Funding

2009 Grant Awards Are Helping to Position Sacramento as Clean-Tech Capital

By Mara Lee

WASHINGTON, D.C. (OBSNews.com) – After touring green job training sites in Sacramento, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) returned to the House of Representatives for the Second Session of the 111th Congress this week, praising Sacramento’s burgeoning clean-energy industry’s dedication to and aggressive pursuit of federal grant funding. The federal government made historic levels of grant funding available in 2009 through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, including the largest federal investment in renewable energy, energy-efficiency, and green job training in our nation’s history.

Sacramento has been one of the largest beneficiaries of this funding in the country, largely due to the aggressiveness of local business, government agencies, and non-profit organizations in seeking out and applying for competitive grants. As a result of their efforts and the grants made available through the Recovery Act, our local economy has received $27,126,256 for job training and assistance in clean-energy jobs, and $18,651,100 for energy efficiency improvements and investments. The almost $48 million is in addition to the $127,506,261 million SMUD and their partners are receiving to install a comprehensive regional smart grid system to serve the Sacramento community.

Congresswoman Matsui Announces $68,000 Federal Grant for Sacramento Housing Agency

SHRA Will Be Able To Hire Coordinator to Connect Families to Job Retraining and Employment Opportunities

By Mara Lee

WASHINGTON, D.C. (OBSNews.com) – Today Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) announced an award of $68,000 in federal funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA). This award will allow SHRA to expand their staff and hire a program coordinator to assist the Family Self Sufficiency Program, further aid local families making the transition from welfare to independence, and provide additional Sacramentans with job retraining and employment opportunities.

“In the midst of furloughs and state budget cuts, the federal funding for our region is increasingly needed,” Matsui said. “Just last week, I visited with local leaders who have brought job-training programs to Sacramento and saw the huge amount of interest from Sacramentans in gaining new skills. We need to continue to make sure that our workforce has the resources it needs to take advantage of new employment and economic opportunities. I am pleased to announce the $68,000 in federal funding for the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, which will allow the agency to expand their staff and extend their help to many more of our neighbors continuing to locate jobs and return to work.”

Senator Cedillo Comments on Governor Schwarzenegger's Proposed 2010-2011 Budget

SACRAMENTO (OBSNews.com) – Sen. Gilbert Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) issued the following statement on Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposed budget for 2010-11. The Governor’s proposal included no state revenue options and drew heavily on cuts to health and human services (43% of solutions), the federal government (35% of solutions) and revenue shifts, fees or local revenue deferrals (23% of solutions).

A stipulation in the Governor’s budget would eliminate entirely the CalWORKs, IHSS, and Healthy Families programs as well as transitional housing placement for foster youth, and funding for enrollment growth at the UC and CSU systems if the federal government does not pay $6.9 billion to the state.

“Yesterday the Governor spoke of team work and the spirit of collaboration. Today he unveiled a budget which holds the most vulnerable in our state hostage for federal monies.
